Exercising with Eczema

The benefits to exercise are endless from improved heart health, energy, sleep, mental and physical health. American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day, while children are encouraged to get 60 minutes. However, exercise with eczema doesn’t come without its own set of challenges.

As our body temperature rises with exercise, sweat naturally produces to cool us down. As the sweat and toxins leave your body, they reside on the skin's surface and as it begins to dry it can trigger an eczema flare almost immediately. Don’t worry, the stubborn itch and discomfort can be treated and even prevented with a few adjustments to your daily workout routine.

Not only does sweat irritate eczema, the clothing rubbing against it can be a large contributing factor to a flare as well. Common spandex workout material is not breathable, and is made with chemicals and dyes causing further irritation. Eczema sleeves that prevent sweat can be helpful and can be worn on the arms and legs during inside and outside exercise. Not only do they protect eczema, they allow you to still wear shorts and shirts without being self conscious and they also prevent direct sun exposure.

The sleeve can be worn on either the knee or elbow and is available in children and adult sizes. All AD RescueWear clothing that is perfect for exercising with eczema can be found here

Exercising outdoors is a perfect way to enjoy nature and calm down. However, a sunburn on top of an eczema flare is a recipe for disaster. Use sunscreen with at least 30 SPF. Apply 5-10 minutes before you begin to workout. Pay attention to ingredients in your moisturizers, sunscreens, shampoos/conditioners. The Eczema Relief Store carries dermatologist-tested sport sunscreen, free from common chemical irritants.

Immediately after exercise a quick lukewarm shower shower is essential to wash off remaining sweat. Pay dry and continue your moisturizing routine as usual. Use a trusted eczema moisturizer, Vaniply Ointment is recommended by most allergists and seal the area with clean eczema clothing.

If symptoms persist, consider a new workout routine. Running and heavy lifting can be strenuous on your body and eczema. Try yoga, pilates, or a brisk walk. Sometimes a gentle exercise can provide a mental break just as beneficial as intense workouts.

Quick Tips:

  • Listen to your body, take necessary breaks and drink plenty of water before and after.
  • If your schedule allows, enjoy outdoor exercise outside 12:00pm-3:00pm when UV rays are the strongest. Regardless, always apply an eczema-safe sunscreen.
  • Take advantage of hand-held fans or spray bottles for quick relief.
  • If you don’t have the opportunity to rinse off, pour a water bottle over your skin to wash it off.

Staying active outdoors can be enjoyable and relaxing with eczema if you listen to your body. Keep up on your daily cleaning and moisturizing routine. Take regular breaks and go at your own pace. Living a healthy life will improve other eczema symptoms and make your life more manageable.
